Housing instability a ‘normal’ part of life for children in poverty

Moving home frequently and housing instability is now a ‘normal’ part of life for some children growing up in poverty, according to The Children’s Society in their three-year study Growing up in Hard Times. The study involved interviews with 60 children and found that moving house on multiple occasions was a key theme. It found that children were shouldering burdens as a result of growing up in poverty, for example having to make long journeys to school, having to stay indoors due to living in unsafe neighbourhoods, and struggling to maintain friendships after moving to a new school or area.
