New NICE guideline on responding to child abuse and neglect

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published new guidance aimed at professionals who come into contact with children, and gives advice on what to do when faced with child abuse or neglect. It sets out the most effective approaches to supporting children to recover after abuse and neglect, and details a range of talking therapies and parenting programmes that should be used, depending on the child’s age and the type of abuse suffered. It also sets out best practice for responses to child abuse and neglect, including that if a child is deemed to be at immediate risk of harm, professionals should contact the police; but if not, professionals should contact children’s social care. The guideline lists the signs that professionals should be aware of that may suggest abuse or neglect is happening.
